Beauty and fragrance: get more from every code

Samples, decants, loyalty points and the one rule about opened products.

A perfume bottle and a lipstick

Beauty stores are generous with codes, gifts and samples, and strict about returns. Knowing both sides is how you get the most out of Wardina, Atoori and Nadaro without ending up with a product you cannot send back.

Opened products do not go back

Almost every beauty store refuses returns on opened cosmetics and perfume, for hygiene reasons. The way around it is samples: Wardina adds free samples to most orders, and Atoori sells 10 ml decants of its expensive scents. Try the sample, then buy the full size with a code.

Loyalty points stack with codes

Codes and loyalty points are not the same thing, and most stores let you use both on the same order. Points are added on the amount you actually paid, so a code reduces the points slightly, but the combination is still better than either alone. Check the points balance before the season starts; stores often double them for a few days.

Gift sets are the real seasonal deal

During Black Friday the gift sets are the products with the biggest discount, because they are made for the season and will not be sold after it. A gift set with a full-size product and two travel sizes usually costs less than the full size alone, and codes apply on top of it at most stores.

Natural and sensitive-skin products

If your skin reacts easily, filter by ingredient rather than by brand. Nadaro shows the full ingredient list on every page and marks the fragrance-free products with a badge. Patch-test a new product for a day before using it on the whole face, and keep the sample packaging so you can find it again.

Fragrance: buy the decant first

Perfume is the most expensive product per millilitre in this category, and the one most often regretted. Our rule is simple: a 10 ml decant first, a full bottle later with a code. Fragrance also ships by ground courier at most stores, so allow an extra day or two.

Terms to look out for

  • Luxury brands often opt out of site-wide codes; the terms under each code list them.
  • “New customers only” codes need a new email address and a new delivery address.
  • Free-gift offers usually require a minimum basket after the discount, not before.
  • Codes on sets sometimes exclude advent calendars.

A simple routine

  1. Order samples or decants of what you are curious about.
  2. Pin the stores so you see new codes on the home page.
  3. Wait for a season or a double-points day for the full sizes.
  4. Apply the code, check that the total changed, and keep the products sealed until you are sure.
