Buying electronics for less: a practical guide

When to buy, what to check and how to use codes on phones, laptops and accessories.

A laptop and a phone with a price tag

Electronics are where a code makes the biggest difference in absolute money, and also where the terms are strictest. This guide walks through the order we follow when we test Voltika, Shahno and Pixlo, and it applies to most electronics stores.

Know the price before the discount

A discount is only as good as the price it is taken from. Before you apply any code, check the price history of the product — most stores show it, and the price-drop alert on Voltika emails you when a wishlist item gets cheaper. If the price went up last week, a 10% code may only bring it back to where it was.

Flagship phones rarely take a code

Phone makers set the price of the newest models, so stores exclude them from site-wide codes. Where you can save on a flagship is the bundle: a case, a charger and a screen protector from an accessories store such as Shahno often cost less than the same items added at the phone store, and the accessories codes apply to them.

Laptops: watch the configuration

Two laptops with the same name can differ by a generation of processor or by half the storage. Compare the exact model number, not the headline. Codes on laptops usually come with a minimum spend that the base model does not reach, so the mid configuration is often the one the code was meant for.

Open-box and refurbished

Open-box units are returned products that were inspected and re-sealed. Pixlo lists them with the full warranty at a clear discount, and codes often still apply. Refurbished is a step further: the product was repaired. Check who did the repair and how long the warranty is before you buy.

Warranty and returns matter more here

A return window of 7 days is common for electronics, and the box and the accessories must come back with the product. Keep the packaging for the first week. Warranties are regional: a phone bought in another country may not be serviced in yours, which is why we list stores by country.

The order we follow

  1. Pick the exact model and note the price history.
  2. Check whether the product is excluded from codes; the terms under each code say so.
  3. If it is a flagship, save on the accessories instead.
  4. Compare open-box units with the full warranty.
  5. Apply the code with the highest success rate at checkout and keep the box.

When to buy

The season pages are the easiest answer: Black Friday is running now, and the electronics stores usually keep their season prices for a few days after it ends. Outside the seasons, the week after a new model launches is when the previous one drops, and the end of a quarter is when stores clear stock.

Questions about this guide

Are codes valid on phones?

Rarely on the newest models. Accessories and older models get the best codes.

Should I wait for a season sale?

For the device, usually yes. For cables and cases a code is enough any week of the year.
